Museums in Austria

Since the term "museum" is not legally protected in Austria, the organization ICOM has set up guidelines for museums to distinguish museums from other cultural, museum-like institutions and facilities. With over 1.700 members, ICOM Austria (International Council of Museums) is one of the largest domestic organizations for museums and museum professionals.

Characteristics of a museum according to ICOM guidelines are the documentation, research and expansion as well as the presentation of the collection. The long-term goal of every museum is to secure and preserve the cultural heritage for future generations.

An important part of achieving this goal is the museum registration, which is considered a quality indicator for sustainable museum work. This should make it easy for visitors and authorities to recognize qualitative museum work.

The Museums in Austria page gives you a comprehensive overview of all registered museums throughout Austria. Here you can also get information about those museums that have been awarded the Austrian museum seal of quality, which recognizes particularly excellent museum work.
