How do SSL certificates work?
Secure Socket Layer, or SSL for short, is a security protocol that, on the one hand, authentication the communication partner carries out, on the other hand also the integrity of all data confirmed and one confidential transmission this ensures. Two basic functionalities are used: a private and a public key. This ensures that important information, such as login or account data, does not fall into the wrong hands and is protected.
The SSL encryption process can be described in four main steps:
- The client, i.e. the user's computer, sends a request to the server to establish a secure connection.
- The server then transmits the necessary certificate.
- The client now generates one session key, which is encrypted with the server's public key.
- The server decrypts this session key using the private key so that the secure connection is finally established.
